Hanover Avenue Designs a Blue & White Living Room

THE SPACE

Years ago, we designed this cheerful room for a precious family in Richmond, Virginia, and even today, it still looks fresh and chic. The space needed to be bullet proof for their three children yet flawless as it was a main thoroughfare into the kitchen (oh, row houses, how we love your flow!) The home already had a formal front living room, so this was a space for movie nights, snacks on the rug, and lots of little bodies launching into sofas and making pillow forts. What could be more adorable that a blue and white family room to check all of these boxes?!

THE DESIGN

When we were brought in to help with this room, we knew all was not lost. There was a solid foundation to jump from, and we wanted to reuse as much as possible – after all, in a children’s room you do not need to break the bank! Key design decisions like finding a bigger rug, choosing an appropriately sized coffee table for the space, eliminating so much leather, framing the art in a stylish way (that’s hung at the correct height), and creating a blue and white palette, allowed us to make the room look much more expensive than it really is – a perfect design for children!

THE FURNITURE

Believe it or not a slipcovered white sofa is incredibly forgiving with kids. Remove, spot treat, and hit with a little stain fighting detergent – it looks like new! The same is true for leather. There is really nothing quite so fabulous as well loved, floppy leather furniture – it just gets better and better with age. The same cannot always be said for faux leather chairs! In this video we reveal some key changes we made to the room and why.

THE DETAILS

Simple changes like the reframed art hung at the right height instantly elevates the whole room! Now they look like important prints rather than “off the rack” finds. A variety of pillows in varying blues is always a good move! Mix patterns, shades of blue, and sizes – here is why that trick never fails! Lastly, when you have a room with “things that fly” – pillows, bodies, toys (hey, moms can any of you relate?!) – use attractive yet inexpensive lamps. Why? They can topple over and break without too much heartache!
