Cozy Reading Corner

Looks like winter is here for good! How many feet of snow will the East Coast get this year?! We say, put the shovel away for a few hours – those buried stairs can wait! Instead, curl up with a good book, a cup of hot chocolate, and plug your kiddos into matrix! These are our top three favorites at the moment: Lauren Liess’s Habitat: The Field Guide to Decorating, Eddie Ross’s Modern Mix, and Julianne Taylor’s DesignHER.

We love these books so much we dreamed up a reading corner to go with them. In a den or a bedroom, in a library or a study, the addition of a big, cozy wing chair with a reading lamp and small side table is a decadent addition.

We’re loving winter whites (inspired by Interior Canvas Home’s Family Room) and mid-century furniture for our nook (inspired by Eddie Ross’s Living Room). And why whitish mid-century? Because it mixes well with everything!  It is the oscar winning supporting actor in any room. Mid-Century boils design to its essence, so it both blends with and elevates whatever you pair with it, and white, well everything plays well with white!

We dream about a Wegner ‘Papa Bear Chair‘ in white upholstery, a George Nakashima ‘Wepman’ table, a Serge Mouille One Arm Floor Lamp, a gorgeous moroccan rug, and a cozy white throw to place on the chair. And full disclosure: We are playing PowerBall to get it (split the earnings with ya?)

* Designer Tip! When choosing monochromatic pieces, remember mixing different textures keep the room from feeling flat: wool, wood, fur, linen….  And don’t forget contrast! Strive for a hit of black in every room, and here we went with a black floor lamp. In a white scheme, you might think to use a white or silver floor lamp; however, the black lamp feels much less expected and gives the room a stylish punch.

SPLURGE

Think of buying mid-century furniture as investing in “livable art”. The originals that are made by 20th century innovators are true pieces of American history and absolutely glorious. Here are our top ‘splurge’ picks.
