Hanover Avenue Interviews Studio Matsalla About Her Dining Room

Hold onto your hats because Vanessa Matsalla, the Principal Designer and owner of Studio Matsalla, is our first guest designer at Hanover Avenue! Can we all just take a minute to soak in this fresh, coastal dining room that she designed for us?! It's hard to make a room look effortless, but Vanessa does it with ease. And It's our lucky day that we can now re-create a room designed by such a talent within our own four walls!

Hanover Avenue Designs a Summer Dream Closet with Rachel Yonan

Remember this room?! We designed this closet closely with Rachel Yonan of Touting My Wears, carefully placing every drawer, shelf, bar, and appliance (yes, appliances!) around what she imagined would work best for fashion if money were no object. The result is a swoon-worthy space that anyone can fall in love with! The best part: she has stocked the closet with all of her top picks for summer!! From "thread to bobble", everything that she loves and wants you to see for the season is hanging and folded with links to stores so you can buy it all! This is a must see!

Hanover Avenue Designs a Room Where Opposites Attract- Everywhere!

Have you ever fallen in love with a room from the glossy pages of a magazine or glowing screen but thought, "that looks nothing like my house"? The ceilings are high, the architecture impressive, nothing like your four walls? Recreating the vibe of the published room in your own house can often seem like an impossibility . . . . But, it's not! And we wanted to show you how to overcome that very issue in this article. Check out these before and afters! We completely spazzzz for them!

Hanover Avenue Designs a Family Room around an Enormous TV: Toned Down!

Instead of soccer we are now watching Game of Thrones, Daddio. Boop! Same furniture, same layout. . . but a completely different look! In the original Enormous TV, we designed a crazy fun room full of bold colors, textures, and patterns to offset a gigantor TV. But because that look might not suit everyone’s taste, we wanted to show how you can you use the very same furniture and pull off a room that’s just as exciting but in a neutral palette. Take a look at these amazing before and afters. BaBoom! The Enormous TV Toned Down!

Hanover Avenue Designs an Arts & Crafts Living Room

Check out this week's Room Makeover! We are excited about this transformation for so many reasons, but mostly because the reader who submitted the before pictures has become one of our favorite people on earth! From Seattle, she lives in a gracious house in a stunning neighborhood whose living room kept her stumped. Like so many of our readers, who in the world has time to focus on interior design when you are a mother, wife, and are watching your career soar at the same time? It was our privilege to help such a wonderful person! Check out every detail behind this fabulous space.

Hanover Avenue Designs a Room for Everyone

For this week's Big Reveal, we wanted to tackle a challenge not many families face: designing a room for a child with a spectrum disorder. We’ve always believed there’s a way to accommodate any family’s concerns when it comes to interior design. Whether it’s making low ceilings seem higher or creating stylish yet accessible rooms for an elderly family member, you can still have a fabulous house while meeting careful considerations! Spectrum Disorders and Sensory Processing Disorders often present a design quandary for families, but by keeping your little one's needs at top of mind, designing for autism can reap a room everyone can enjoy. Here’s a look at what we did!

Hanover Avenue Designs a Room Where Opposites Attract

You say poTAYto and they say paTAHto! Have you ever come to realize that while you love your significant other, you’re just not in love with their sense of style? Getting couples to agree on the look of a space is one of the most common problems in interior design. While having two drastically different tastes may seem like a clash of the titans, we’ve found that the best (and most memorable) rooms often come from a collision of styles. There is beauty in chaos! In this room, we combined two polarizing tastes: traditional vs. modern. Giving a fresh twist to classic silhouettes and patterns, we created an interesting hybrid that allows both styles to play off each other with a timeless vibe. See how we made it work in this room!

Hanover Avenue Designs a Family Room around an Enormous TV

"Babe, this is gonna make game day AMAZING!” Raise your hand if you're married to this guy? We can’t count the number of times we've had to 'design around' an enormous TV. And let’s face it, a humongo TV makes some people happy on Monday nights when the game is on, and makes everyone else happy on Sunday nights when Game of Thrones is on, so win-win! Since people love the big black box, we see designing around a TV as a fun design challenge instead of a decorating nightmare. Here’s how we made it work in this space!

Hanover Avenue Designs a Room for Dog Lovers

For today's room makeover, we’ve transformed a dog-loving family’s new living room into a gracious space for entertaining. In a large house that already has a family room and a playroom just for the kids, we thought it was about time the adults had their own elegant space to host friends – and after all, this loving couple deserves a pretty place to relax while the boys are occupied in the playroom. The wonderful family that lives here has a classic style rooted in Virginia tradition, so we stayed true to that while adding subtle, modern nods to keep the room feeling fresh and to reflect the wife’s bubbly and fun personality. Take a look at how we made it work!

Hanover Avenue Designs: Using the pieces from an “Unfinished” Basement for a City Loft

Welp, we’re not in the basement anymore! Many of you may remember elements of this space as “The Unfinished Basement”, and as promised, we wanted to reveal how to use these same pieces in a sophisticated Brooklyn-style urban loft or pied-à-terre. While you don’t have to worry about flooding or cracks in this space, these “bulletproof” indoor/outdoor pieces still make for a worthy investment for the first-time homeowner or anyone who wants a stylish apartment. Super versatile and chic, they’ll always work anywhere, whether used together or arranged separately. Now, on to the loft!

Hanover Avenue Designs a Coastal Bedroom

Who has time to think about what goes into a bedroom when your days are spent raising little boys and saving lives at a hospital? When we got the opportunity to design our first ‘Room Makeover’, I did an emotional cartwheel (I can’t do a physical cartwheel) because who deserves a bedroom sanctuary more than a hardworking doctor and mother? We’re thrilled to be able to unveil this bedroom here today as a little present to a wonderful family!

Hanover Avenue Designs a Tiny Room

Ever been dwarfed by an armchair when you sit in it? Your knees don’t reach the edge of the cushions so your legs stick out like a toddler on a dining chair…. Or have you tried to buy a sofa for your regular sized room only to realize the arms of the sofa alone are 12” wide? That is only great when Shaquille O’Neal, Andre the Giant, or God come over. I will never understand the monolithic furniture trend.

Hanover Avenue Designs an “Unfinished” Basement

The basement can be a scary place: dark, damp and definitely the last room anyone wants to spend money when feathering their nest. Why invest big money if the room could easily flood, grow mold or even crack? Often, truly renovating a basement to bring it to “upstairs standards” is a Pandora’s box of unforeseen problems and dollar signs: underpinning, structural headaches, ancient electrical issues, cracked pipes…. “How can I make my basement stylish and usable without spending too much?” is the question I often hear from my clients. You have the space in your home, so why not use the real estate, right? Let us show you how.

Hanover Avenue Designs a Pink Bedroom

At least once in our life we will have a pink room. And single men reading this (would a single straight man even read this?), one day you may marry a girl who wants a pink room for either herself, your baby, your teenage daughter, or as a guest room. Because let’s face it, pink done right is stunning, and it makes everyone in its glow look prettier. (Plus, Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and I have pink on my mind!)
